Spiral of Drift, ebru (battal), pigments and ox gall on paper
A broad spiral current gathers the surface into motion, drawing pale blue battal forms inward as if foam were being pulled toward a slow, rotating tide. Around this vortex, veins of olive green, ochre, crimson, and charcoal braid tightly, compressing and releasing the flow in rhythmic cycles. The composition feels centrifugal yet contained—energy in motion, held just before dispersal.
Scale and tempo are carefully orchestrated. Larger battal pools anchor the spiral’s core, while smaller, quickened cells scatter toward the perimeter, accelerating the eye outward and back again. The clarity of the internal rings and the resilience of the veining attest to a disciplined control of pigment density and ox gall, even as complexity increases. Spiral of Drift embodies ebru’s paradox: a surface shaped by chance, yet guided by intention—where movement itself becomes the central form.
